This episode is a little snippet from the Experience Summit 2018. Basic Bananas head facilitator Shandra shares her tips on what you can do to improve your relationship with money to take your business to the next level.
Shandra: So we‘re going to look at how your relationship with money impacts your results with money. It is a really interesting topic because not many people talk about or it‘s something that‘s either sometimes is a little bit rude or people get very uncomfortable talking about.
But the reality is that it‘s one of the most influential relationships that you have in your life because it is very difficult to go even one day without thinking about, talking about or using money in some way. Would you greet anyone who thought about money at all today? You have now? That‘s my gift to you. But that‘s the thing. We also have experienced as children when we‘re growing up in our formative years, age 0-7 now called the imprinting period. In that time we are like awesome little sponges and we just absorb what we experience around us and we create meaning about. One of the things that we absorb is what we learn about what money is and what it means when you have it and when you don‘t.
There are huge differences in how people experience money. But what happens is that those little stories about what does it mean when you have money and somebody else doesn‘t. What does it mean when somebody else has money and you don‘t? It sets up this situation where we attribute stories to what that means. What it means.. what money actually means. Is it attributed to a lot of power often? But money in and of itself doesn‘t have any power. It‘s a thing. It‘s a tool. But often we attribute and we give it power through the stories in association that have been created over time.
These stories then become like baggage that you carry around with you generally, unconsciously. You just act out your life fulfilling the stories and the beliefs that you attributed to money when you were a child. Sometimes, that baggage is useful and you‘re very happy that you have it with you and it serves you well. Sometimes, that baggage actually is holding you back. This is one of the reasons why I think I have become so passionate about talking with my clients about money is because especially, as business owners and especially as business owners who want to create an impact if your relationship with money is not a positive and empowered one, it will hand break your ability to create the biggest impact that you could.
Often what I see and experiencing conversations is that people who do something for their work that is service-based, that little head of the money story pops up and says, if you really genuinely care, then should just do it for free. Especially, people that are in any kind of any well-being industry – yoga, any kind of nutritional, anybody that‘s truly like providing their service this often comes up, especially for women. There‘s a whole different session I could do about the differences that can sometimes women bring to their relationship with money and how that plays out.
But what you want to do is start to become a little bit more aware of what is your relationship with money, how is it serving you or how is it potentially holding you back and what you can do then to get to the next level in whatever your financial situation is.
