Franziska: What are you doing?
Christo: Who me?
Franziska: Yeah.
Christo: Oh, just being a guru.
Franziska: Uh-huh.
Christo: Yeah.
Franziska: How can I become a guru?
Christo: How can you become a guru?
Franziska: Do I need to sit like that?
Christo: First thing is sit like this. It’s funny you asked, because there’s a lot of gurus out there. Well, there’s a lot of so called gurus out there but if you want to become a real guru, you know, industry for business owners, it’s funny you asked, because I was actually just thinking of 5 steps a business owner can take to become a guru in their industry or in their niche.
Franziska: Okay. So, what are the 5 steps?
Christo: Step number 1 is continue learning. So keep learning forever and taking in information; no matter how guru you are, there’s always more guru, and more guru, and more guru to be and to become. So, you can get audio CDs, DVDs, you can learn from books, read. Read books, read on anything business, sales, marketing, is always good for business growth, systemizing a business. Get a mentor, join programs, join courses; keep learning continually. Even reading half an hour or 20 minutes a day is going to keep you green and growing instead of ripe and rotting, as they say in guru land.
Franziska: So the first step is learning, learning as much as I can. What about step number 2?
Christo: Step number 2, good question, is being someone who actually does what they say. Now doing the do, we could call it, ‘walking your talk’. There’s quite a few more come across some gurus at times which actually teach and it‘s not so much a case of… It’s more a case of “do as I say, not as I do”, as you’d say. So, they’ll teach but not necessarily do the things themselves. So, walk your talk if you’re to be the guru, continually doing the do.
Franziska: So it’s better when I teach something, it’s better if I actually do it myself so I have a little bit of credential and a good reputation that I can then show how I did something to my guys.
Christo: Exactly… Walking proof.
Franziska: Oh, there are a lot of cowboys out there, is that right?
Christo: Exactly right. Yes.
Franziska: What’s step number 3?
Christo: Number 3 is share your knowledge… Be open with your knowledge. So share what you have, be open. A real guru is comfortable to share… people that tend to hold their knowledge back and think if I share, it’s you know, “People are going to rip me off, or whatever, and take my stuff.” You know, by sharing, people will actually see you as generous. They’ll also get to see that you know your stuff and you get to position yourself as that kind of ‘guru person’. What tends to happen is the people will actually follow you if you’re the one giving, even people within your industry will see you as a bit of a guru because you’re the one out there giving information free to an extent.
Franziska: Awesome! That’s a great step. So step or tip number 3…
Christo: Generosity.
Franziska: Is share generously and freely without worrying about people learning more.
Christo: Exactly, exactly. How will anybody know you’re a guru if you’ve got your information all locked up.
Franziska: What about tip 4?
Christo: Tip number 4 is getting amongst it. So people need to know, you need to go out there and about. So you need to join associations or clubs or networking groups. You need to, if it can be part of a body or governing body in your industry or part of an association, it’s a good idea to do.
Franziska: Be part of a body, like an outer body or an inner body.
Christo: Out of body experience, get amongst it… Exactly. And that leads to step number 5 as well on the guru ladder. Well, there is a lot of steps we can take, we’re only looking at 5 today. And that is to get others to talk about you. When you’re generous, people would tend to talk about you. She’s likely to go out and tell people about what a generous guru I was. Being great is another way. Take a fantastic sportsman for example, Roger Federer. People talk about him because he’s fantastic. He’s a guru on what he does but he didn’t just click overnight and have that, you know, all of those prizes and awards and acclaims. It’s a lot of work, and the same in business or whatever your niche is in business.
Franziska: So what if I sit here and close my eyes and really hope that somebody’s going to talk about me. Is that how it works or not?
Christo: No. Get out there, take action, and get things happening. That’s how we become a guru.
Franziska: That’s great.
