Christo Hall: Hey there guys, welcome to this Basic Bananas video marketing tip.
Franziska Iseli Hall: Welcome.
Christo Hall: This is actually the result of a listener question. So we‘ve had a question come through which was about, “What‘s the deal with databases? Do I need one for my business? And how do I segregate it?” Because I guess somebody‘s told them, probably us, that you need to have a database and it needs to be segregated. So they said can you please translate that into English. So we‘re going to do that right now for you and tell you exactly what groups you should have within your database. How to segregate it. So first of all, what is a database?
Franziska Iseli Hall: Yeah, it‘s a good question. What is a database and maybe what is a database management system? And it‘s basically a system that you use that is usually hosted in the cloud up there somewhere where you can collect all your contacts. So all of your contacts, your clients, your past clients, your future clients, they‘re all in one system. So if at the moment you‘re using an Excel spreadsheet, maybe you need to upgrade in a little bit and we can show you how. So lets just upgrade and use something in the cloud if you‘re not doing that already.
Why? Because if you use a system like the one that we use… we can recommend to you below in the notes, it helps you access information from anywhere, anytime; and also your team members. If you have team members, they can just access it and update your notes as they go. So if somebody calls, Andrew calls, inquires about your services or your products, your team member whoever picks up the phone can go into your database management system, look up the person and enter their notes and say that this person was interested, we need to follow up. We could never run Basic Bananas or any business that we have online without a database management system.
Christo Hall: That‘s right.
Franziska Iseli Hall: Now let‘s look at how to segment into groups because that‘s another big question that we get asked a lot.
Christo Hall: Yeah, so it‘s very important. The reason why we need to segregate the database into groups is because if you‘re selling different products you want to be marketing the right products to the right people, or the right information to the right people. So it can be geographically segmented… Like let‘s say you‘re promoting a product or a workshop in Melbourne, you want to promote to Melbourne people, but you don‘t want to be sending it to your database in Sydney and bothering them. Because if you send it to them they‘re going to get annoyed because obviously they‘re opening e-mails that are irrelevant to them. And eventually learn to not open your e-mails and to opt out of your list. So everything needs to be specific and targeted so you‘re not wasting their time either. So it can be geographically segmented depending on locations.
And there‘s three lists that every database should have as a starting point. And that is past clients, existing clients and potential clients. So that you‘re marketing different things to these different groupings. You might also have different products which you market to different people. You might want to segregate too, to the different products or different membership levels and so on.
Franziska Iseli Hall: Yeah, I think that‘s a great start for you. Now what I‘d love you to do is if you already have a system like this, can you just post below? Tell us what sort of groups you‘ve got. How do you segregate your database because you can share your ideas with everyone else that is listening and we can even learn… Everyone can learn. So I‘d like you to share that. If you‘re not using a system yet, just feel free to share the video that you found useful with anyone who needs something like this in their business. It will really make a big difference for your business.
Christo Hall: I look forward to seeing you soon.
